With so many winter activities throughout Lake Tahoe and the surrounding regions, it is no surprise that each year new stories arise of avalanche victims. Lake Tahoe is home to a variety of snowpack. As a result avalanche terrain is common place throughout it’s surrounding wilderness. Our avalanche course is geared towards identifying avalanche areas, stability assessment, route-finding, metamorphism and layering, as well as rescue techniques deployed in the event of an avalanche. This course provides a framework with regards to risk management, safety assessments of the designated travel area, types and characteristics of avalanches and the rescue equipment utilized.
